Top 5 tips for Surviving Back to School

Updated: Aug 28

If you are running around frantically trying to ensure that your kids have a new ruler, calculator, PE shorts and then you suddenly remember you forgot about socks and labels, you are not alone!!

Mums have so many to do lists and things to remember, the kids decide they want a specific item the night before school starts and then you're doing a next day panic Amazon delivery for a random green highlighter. It can all be a bit overwhelming.

I want to remind you how to look out for yourself too! Follow my Facebook page or Linked In for regular health tips.

It is so easy to burn out in these first few weeks back at school, the kids are bringing new germs home and before you know it you have caught a chest infection.

Here are my top 5 tips for YOU, and YOUR health and YOUR sanity, the kids are resilient and they have you watching their back, who is watching your back??

  1. Think about boosting your immunity - Ginger shots - start taking something to improve your immunity, Ginger shots are fabulous with turmeric and lemon, you can make your own in a juicer. Ginger tea - put fresh ginger pieces (about 1inch peeled should do it) in a pot with lemon and hot water and make a ginger/lemon brew. Add a dash of honey for a sweetener. Use turmeric in cooking.

  2. Consider a supplement, Vitamin D is highly recommended in the UK due to the lack of sunshine we get here. Especially from September through to April. Vitamin D can be found in oily fish like Salmon and Mackerel and Broccoli and Eggs.

Also, consider a prebiotic to improve gut health and help strengthen resilience to illness, both physical and mental.

  3. Keep exercising outside - it's already turning cold and it's tempting to stop the walks and stay indoors or make them shorter. Keep pushing yourself to make time outdoors in nature, despite the weather it helps mental health, boosts energy, improves productivity and keeps us fit.

  4. Alcohol free days - you may have overdone the summer drinking so give your liver a much needed rest. Try to have at least 3 days a week where you don't drink alcohol and increase water to help rehydrate the body systems. Alcohol is a toxin and lowers your immunity and overloads the liver, making it work much harder than it's supposed too.

  5. Ask yourself, what do you need right now??

This seems odd but do you really know the answer?

Do you ever actually think about what you need?

Are you too busy worrying about what everyone else needs?

My clients come to me thinking they need to lose weight or eat better and that can be part of it. But when we actually talk about the barriers getting in the way it can be something far more obvious. I recently asked my kids and husband to choose 2 nights where they could cook the dinner and walk the dog.

This now frees up 2 nights a week for me to do my marketing for my business. It now means that I am not resentful about cooking dinner. I am trying new recipes as I have the headspace to be more creative. The kids are enjoying the responsibility and learning new skills. Ask for help, ask for what you need and explain why it's important to you so everyone understands. Make sure you are specific and agree set dates and times.

It's often the small changes that impact health and wellbeing and then the side effect is we start to feel better, look better and live better.
